Chainsaws are a very handy piece of equipment that you need to have in your garage. If they’re handled safely, then they can be very useful. Chainsaws are used to cut through heavy brush, cut wood into firewood, fell trees, and reduce trees. There are many different types of chainsaws. If you’re intending on buying one, then you need to know which is the best type for you.
In this article, we are going to explain what six different types of chainsaw are, as well as their benefits:
Pocket Chainsaws
Pocket chainsaws are chains with bladed teeth, which attach to a handle. They don’t look like your typical chainsaw, but they’re a perfect chainsaw for home use, especially if you’re using it for smaller jobs. Unlike other chainsaws, they aren’t a detriment to the environment. These chainsaws are portable and silent too, which makes them very popular. Pocket chainsaws are used for cutting firewood and other small pieces of wood. They can’t be used for larger jobs, like felling trees, although you can use them for reducing small branches from trees. The only downside to them is that they’re difficult to use.
Battery Chainsaws
If you care about the environment, then you should think about investing in a battery chainsaw. These chainsaws run on rechargeable batteries, instead of petrol. Unfortunately, the battery life on these chainsaws can be quite short. If you need to use a chainsaw for long periods of time and on big jobs, then you should probably invest in a petrol-powered chainsaw. They don’t produce any gas fumes, they’re very quiet, and they’re portable, like pocket chainsaws. Because they’re battery-powered, they do produce less power than a petrol-powered chainsaw would do, however.
Electric Chainsaws
Electric chainsaws are usually plugged into a mains socket and are always corded. Electric chainsaws can produce much more power than a battery-powered chainsaw because they are plugged into a power source. If you’re working at home, then they’re perfect. For more remote, outdoor jobs, they’re impractical unless you have a power generator with you. Unfortunately, the cords rarely stretch very far. They’re very easy for beginners to use, but they can be dangerous. If the cord is cut, then you could electrocute yourself. You do need to make sure that you’re extra careful when you’re using an electric chainsaw, even if you’re experienced.
Pole Chainsaws
Pole chainsaws are another type of saw that’s very similar to chainsaws, but they’re not technically a chainsaw. Even so, they work more or less the same which is why we have included them on this list. They are essentially chainsaws on sticks, which are used to cut down high tree branches. They’re fantastic for removing deadfall and dangerous branches that would be too high to reach and would hurt somebody if they fell. Pole saws are typically less powerful than chainsaws are, but they’re still very effective. Modern chainsaws can be operated from the bottom of the pole. They can run on petrol, batteries, or electricity.
Petrol Chainsaws
Petrol chainsaws are the ones that most people will be familiar with. They have a starter cord that needs to be pulled to power up the chainsaw. Petrol chainsaws are inarguably the most powerful type of chainsaw, although they can also be the most expensive. They can cut through wood of more or less any size. However, they are very loud and produce gas fumes, which can be disorientating. When you use a petrol chainsaw, you’ll need to be strong. You will also need an ear and eye protection. You need to take petrol everywhere with you when you use these chainsaws so that you can keep its tank filled. These chainsaws can be very dangerous if you’re not experienced with them, mainly because of how powerful they are. Make sure you’ve undertaken adequate training before you attempt to operate one.
Pneumatic Chainsaws
Pneumatic chainsaws are very powerful chainsaws, far more so than petrol chainsaws. They’re less common for home, however. Pneumatic chainsaws are used industrially. You won’t ever need one for your garden or for a tree. Instead, they’re used to cut through metal and concrete, which makes them particularly useful for construction workers. Unlike petrol chainsaws, they do not contribute to emissions. They’re very effective for what they’re used for, although it’s unlikely that you’ll ever need to use one. If you do, then you’ll find that they are very expensive. You can probably hire one from an industrial machinery retailer or manufacturer.
With the information contained within this article, you should be able to choose the right chainsaw for you. Make sure that you’re careful whenever you’re using a chainsaw and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Be safe.
