It can be incredibly frustrating when you have a whole lot of clothes but not a whole lot of places to put them. Closets are great for keeping things organized, preventing creases and making the room look neater but when they’re too small to hold all of your material belongings, they seem to be rendered useless and you end up taking up even more space by trying to find additional storage for all of your items. There are ways to make the most out of your small closet space, though, to really optimize it and ensure you’re able to use every small nook and cranny without having to spend a lot of money or time installing the ideas.
Have a sort through of all your clothes
While this might not seem like it has anything to do with making your closet more useable, it’s a good practice to get into. You might find that you don’t need as much space as you thought you did. Those jeans you can no longer wriggle into? Throw them out. If you don’t wear it, like it, or fit into it any more then get into the habit of throwing it out. It helps reduce the amount of items to store away and means it doesn’t look so overwhelming when it comes to finding something to wear. If you can’t quite bear to throw them out, you could also try and sell them or take them to a charity or thrift shop.
Install hooks on the inside of the closet door
If you have a lot of scarves or ties, they can easily start taking up space in your closet. You don’t need to be too handy to install a few hooks into the back of a door. Once they’re up, you can organize your items better and hang up belts, ties, scarves and other similar items. This saves you rack space and means they won’t end up on the floor of your closet when they inevitably fall off.
Make use of vacuum storage bags
Dresses for special occasions, all those summer clothes that it’s too cold to wear and the endless supply of jackets can take up a lot of room. If it’s something that you know you’re not going to use for the next few months, investing in a vacuum storage packet can really help save room. It’ll shrink down the clothing to their absolute smallest possible size and mean you can stack them neatly on the bottom of your closet without them taking up unnecessary room.
Chain your hangers together
There’s no reason not to have multiple hangers attached to another; you can use this to store all your similar clothes together – such as vest and tank tops, or even suit trousers to keep them neat and together. This saves rack room without it looking messy. You can either hang the hangers on each other or use a chain to keep them all together and orderly. You can find cheap and colorful chains to make your closet seem bright and inviting.
Add a shoe rack to keep organized
You don’t need to have copious DIY knowledge to place a few tension rods in the bottom of your closet. Shoe boxes take up a lot of space and aren’t too space conscious. A tension rack would allow for you to line your shoes up neatly in the bottom and be able to see what is there at a glimpse.
More shelving space
If you have room at the top or bottom of your closet, shelves are a great way to fold up clothing and store them on to keep them from tumbling over and creating a mess at the bottom of your closet. They can also be used to store away the items that are trickier to hang up or that you don’t have to worry about creasing, such as underwear or socks bundled up neatly together.
Make use of awkward spaces
There’s absolutely nothing to stop you maximizing all the space in your closet by adding more racks. Most of the time, the sides of the closet are untouched and they can be difficult to add clothes into. Adding a new rack or two going width ways, corner to corner, can give you more hanging space to put more of your clothes without making the closet look like an explosion of material.
